Upper Captiva also known as North Captiva Island is the best-kept secret in Florida. Only four miles long and half a mile wide, North Captiva is a Caribbean-style barrier island accessible only by a short boat ride. There are no cars and no paved roads (transportation is only by electric golf cart on palm tree covered sandy roads!)

Development has been carefully planned and the environment protected to insure that everyone will be able to enjoy one of the few remaining natural wonders of Florida.

The Island abounds with outdoor beauty. Over 700 acres of natural habitat have been preserved for the protection of endangered wildlife.

There are so many things to do and see here on Upper Captiva Island.

The wildlife sanctuary and wilderness park is great for hiking and bicycling.

Migratory and nesting birds such as osprey, herons, egrets wood storks, bald and sea eagles, pelicans and over 500 other species can been seen at different times of the year. Gopher tortoises and sea turtles roam this island Wonderland freely.

Manatees, dolphins and sea otters are regular sights from the islands shores!

The fishing is exceptional and includes snook, tarpon, red fish, flounder, sea trout, snapper and many other varieties are caught in these waters. Numerous activities are available on this unspoiled island for visitors such as beach combing, bird watching, fishing, swimming, shelling, dolphin watching, nature walks, boating, reading, photographing wild life, stargazing, kayaking, and best of all doing absolutely nothing but relaxing in your own private Island Paradise.

North Captiva is an island that is Boat access only. There is a ferry 'ISLAND GIRL CHARTERS' that departs from Pine Land Marina on Pine Island Florida. The ferry makes the 5 mile journey 6 times per day. Leaving every odd Hour from the mainland at 7, 9,11,1,3, 5 pm. For more information visit there website.

HISTORY OF THE ISLAND

Located on Florida’s Southwest Gulf Cost of Mexico is the Paradise Island of Upper Captiva Island.

Upper Captiva Island is also called North Captiva Island and is located north of Captiva Island and south Cayo Costa Island.

Calusa Indians first inhabited Captiva Island over 6,000 years ago up until the conquistadors arrived and nearly wiped out the tribes.

Ponce De Leon sailed these waters in the early 1500’s and famous pirates frequented the Island such as Jose’ Gaspar. The Island earned its name from the women held “captive” by the pirates for ransom.

Some believe a pirate treasure is buried on these islands, just waiting to be discovered.

A hurricane in 1921 severed Captiva Island into two separate landmasses, thus creating the island that we now know as “Upper or North Captiva Island” There are no Bridges or roads to captiva. Access is only by boat or small aircraft. (Click “Getting Here” for information on getting to North Captiva Island.)

This lush secluded barrier island is famous for it’s breath taking sunsets and pristine white sandy beaches that offer true unspoiled natural beauty. A tropical island playground awaits you at upper Captiva Island, “Come enjoy the ultimate Island Experience!”

Beautiful property. Very well-appointed, meticulously cared for - inside and out.
Very well done. Super comfortable. Very well appointed inside. The house is well cared for, and so are the grounds, exceptionally so. Steve the owner goes above and beyond to make sure the house is sparkling clean, well stocked with the basics. Cooks, you can leave your spice cupboard home. Steve was exceptionally responsive to our questions about the property. One of the golf carts malfunctioned and Steve quickly gave us access to one of his personal golf carts. The pool is beautiful, heated and well-tended. The pool table and horseshoes kept us busy when we weren’t walking or running the fabulous beach and soft sandy streets. This house and property are top-of-the-line, and we have rented several times on Upper Captiva, and many times with VRBO throughout the world. You won’t find a nicer more comfortable house.
